Youth

We help young people participate in a range of activities designed to bring them into contact with adults in their community and to increase their own confidence and self-esteem. Our aim is to get young people interested in the place where they live and to help them play a full and active part in society. We do this by encouraging them to take part in practical activities such as making videos about life in their neighbourhood or planning and designing their own play areas or youth shelters. Some of these activities are specifically targeted in places where there are high levels of crime as a way of harnessing young people’s energy and reducing antisocial behaviour.

Engaging Youth in the South East - Case Study

S.A.Y - Solent Active Youth

Groundwork Solent was successfully awarded £143,816 from the Community Fund to build upon existing youth provision and create an active youth programme in additional areas of identified need, taking into account areas where little or no provision is available for young people to access. The project aims to ensure that opportunities are developed and maintained to ensure the inclusion of young people and that they are encouraged to achieve their potential through personal and social development.

Young people are often faced with health issues early on in their lives and the projects seek to address and raise awareness of these issues enabling the young people to become familiar with specialist agencies who provide support.  The clubs focus on many issues which young people experience during their adolescent development: - health issues such as substance misuse/awareness, smoking, nutritional advice, exercise, sexual health etc. We feel that by increasing young people’s skill and knowledge levels it enables them to make informed choices on decisions which may affect their chosen lifestyle.

The original outputs of the project included:

  • Sustainability of three existing youth clubs, Magennis Girl to Girl; Seafield Young Women’s Group and Physical Positivity
  • Development of 6 new youth groups
  • Providing health promotion to 150 young people
  • Promoting environmental issues to 150 young people
